let's talk

Called, Not Browsed

Nobody researches a plumber. They find one.

The visit is short, it is on a phone, and it usually happens during a problem.

What that removes from the page, and the three things that have to survive.

Home services website design: the visit is 40 seconds

Somebody with water on the floor is not comparing brand values. They are checking three things: do you do this, do you come here, can I reach you now. If all three are not answered in the first screen they are back on the results page, and the decision took less time than reading this paragraph.

That is a design constraint rather than a copy one. It means the hero cannot be a mood shot with a slogan over it, because the slogan is occupying the space where the service area should be.

Zero is the version of this problem for a considered purchase rather than an emergency: air conditioning is invisible until it is wrong, so the page had to make comfort something you could actually see. Same discipline, longer fuse — the visitor still needs the answer before the atmosphere.

The three that have to be visible before any scrolling

**The service, named the way people say it.** Not “residential solutions”. Boiler repair, drain unblocking, leather restoration. The words on the page should be the words in the search box, and this is the single most common gap between a trades site and the enquiries it could be getting.

**The area you cover.** A town list, not a radius on a map. Half of wasted enquiries in this trade are geography, and they waste the caller's time as well as yours.

**A tappable phone number.** Not an image of a number, not a contact page two clicks away. On a phone, in the header, on every page. Forms are for out of hours, and that is worth saying next to the form.

Evidence beats description

Utah Leather Repair is the clean example: restoration work only sells on evidence, so the whole hero is evidence. Before and after, in the first screen, doing the arguing that adjectives cannot.

The same holds for any trade whose output is visible. A photograph of the finished work is worth more than a paragraph about craftsmanship, and a pair of photographs is worth more than either. Most trades sites have these images on a phone and never put them on the site.

Reviews belong near the phone number rather than in a section of their own. The moment of hesitation is the moment before calling, and that is where the reassurance has to sit — see social proof that actually works.

What to leave out

The multi-step quote wizard. It feels efficient and it is a wall in front of a person who wanted to talk to somebody. If the pricing genuinely needs questions, ask two and get the rest on the phone.

The About page as a destination. Nobody in this trade arrives wanting the company history. One honest paragraph and a face is plenty, and the face matters more than the paragraph.

Everything that delays the first screen. A large hero video on a phone connection is a real cost paid by every visitor to save the page from looking plain. Read speed is a feature for what that actually costs.

Questions we get asked

What should a home services website have on the homepage?

The service named the way customers say it, the towns you cover, and a tappable phone number — all before any scrolling. Everything else is optional. The typical visit is under a minute, on a phone, during a problem.

Do trades websites need a quote form?

As a secondary option for out of hours, yes. As the primary call to action, no — people in this situation want to speak to someone, and a multi-step wizard is a wall in front of that. Two fields at most, then the phone.

How important are photos of previous work?

For any trade with a visible result, they are the argument. A before-and-after pair in the hero does what a paragraph about craftsmanship cannot, and most businesses already have these photographs on a phone without ever putting them on the site.
