The three routes, honestly priced
**You prompt it yourself.** Cost: a subscription and a weekend. You get a site that exists. You also get every decision made by averaging, no redirect plan, and a page weight nobody measured. For validating an idea this is the correct spend and anything more is waste.
**A freelancer with AI.** Typically a few hundred to a couple of thousand. Fast, often good, and entirely dependent on whether that person reads what the model returns. The range exists because some do and some do not, and the difference only shows up later.
**A studio.** Our own published numbers run from $700 for a one-page landing to $10,000 for a forty-page site with 3D, and what sits behind each band is design, build, SEO basics and testing rather than hours.
What the cheap route charges later
**Traffic you already had.** A rebuild without a redirect map loses rankings that took years to earn. This is the single most expensive line item in this entire article and it never appears on a quote.
**Enquiries you never knew about.** A form that submits nowhere, a phone number that is not a link on mobile, a CTA that scrolls instead of opening. Nobody complains; they just leave.
**Editing.** If every change is a prompt and the prompts live with someone who has moved on, your site is frozen. Owning the account and the files is worth more than the design.
**The rebuild.** The commonest outcome of a cheap AI site is a paid rebuild within a year, which means the real price was the cheap one plus the proper one.
Where the saving is real
It is real, and we would rather say so than pretend. A simple site genuinely costs less to build than it did two years ago, and any studio charging 2019 prices for 2026 work is charging for its own inefficiency.
What has not moved is the thinking: what the page must do, who it is for, which version of the offer goes above the fold. That was always the expensive part, it just used to be hidden inside a large build fee.
So the right question at quote time is not *why is this not cheaper*. It is *what am I buying that the model did not produce*. A studio that cannot answer that sentence is worth skipping.
Questions we get asked
How much does it cost to build a website with AI?
Doing it yourself costs a subscription and a weekend. A freelancer using AI usually runs from a few hundred to a couple of thousand. A studio build with design, SEO, testing and handover starts around $700 for one page and rises with scope, not with hours.
Is it cheaper to use AI than to hire an agency?
Up front, always. Over a year, often not, once you count lost rankings from a missing redirect plan, enquiries lost to a broken form, and the rebuild that follows. The cheap route is genuinely right for validating an idea and genuinely risky for a site carrying revenue.
Why do agencies still charge for websites if AI can build them?
Because the build was never the product. You are paying for what the page has to achieve, which decisions were made and why, the review of everything the model produced, and someone who answers the phone when something breaks after launch.
